Carter-Trent Funeral Home, is a business built on service and tradition.
That service and tradition, began in 1920 when the Huff Funeral Home opened its doors to serve the downtown Kingsport area. The owners were the late J.W. Huff and J. Frank Nelson, who served the community for years. In 1954 it was purchased by Bill Carter and Frank Clamon to become Carter-Clamon Funeral Home. It was then purchased by Mr. Dean Trent and became Carter-Trent Funeral Home.
Mr. Trent started his career in funeral service in 1959, as a partner in a funeral home in Gate City, Va. and has worked for over 50 years providing service and comfort to the families of the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, now consists of three locations. The downtown Kingsport location was completely remodeled in 1998; the Church Hill location was opened on January 1, 1996 to serve the families of Hawkins County and our newest location, the Scott County Funeral Home was acquired in November of 2003 and completely renovated with the addition of a new chapel (seating capacity of 350) to serve the families of Scott County and surrounding areas.

Our staff is caring, dedicated and a very professional group of men and women, who take great pride in the service that they give, striving to go beyond what is required, providing not only service but comfort to every family we serve creating, Special Memories of Life.

Dean and Martha Trent
Dean and Martha have been involved in funeral service since Dean's involvement in Gate City Funeral Home in 1959. Dean and Martha have been married since 1957 and have been active and involved in this area all their lives from when Dean's father, Rex was owner of the Peggy Ann Restaurant and Martha's father, Rev Carl Triplett, was pastor of the Temple Baptist Church.
Dean is active in many organizations including the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association, Mason's, Shriner's, and Chamber of Commerce, to name a few. Their family continues that tradition of service as their children, Judy Addington, Deana Steadman and Jodi Redwine, work in the Kingsport office.
Dean and Martha Trent, owners of the funeral home from 1991 - 2012 are very active in the day to day operations of the funeral home. His love of his community is his drive in serving the many thousand of families of Carter-Trent Funeral Home.
Dean’s nephew, Brenton D. Warner is the General Manager and works from the downtown Kingsport location; Bradley R. Price is manager of the Church Hill location and Damon W. Depew is manager of the Scott County location.
Dean and Martha are members of the Temple Baptist Church.
Brent Warner, General Manager and Licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer
Brent, who is a nephew of Dean Trent is a life long resident of Kingsport. Has been with the firm since 1991 and is the General Manager overseeing all three locations and the daily operations of the Funeral Homes. Brent graduated from Sullivan North High School in 1991. He graduated from John A. Gupton College in Nashville in 1995 and has held his Tennessee License for Funeral Directing and Embalming since 1996. He became a funeral service provider for the State of Virginia in July of 2009. Brent has two children a son, Blain and a daughter, Blair. Brent is active in the community with the American Heart Association, the East Hawkins Co. Chamber of Commerce, the TSSAA and the Downtown Kingsport Optimist Club. You will see him on his off time doing what he enjoys most, running!
Damon Wayne Depew, Manager, Lic. FD & Emb.
Damon Depew, 36, is a native of Kingsport and is married to Sarah Harr Depew. His parents are Rev. J.W. and Frances Taylor Depew. A second generation funeral director, Damon has been involved in funeral service since he was 16 and has been licensed funeral director and embalmer in TN since 2001 and is the Manager of Scott County Funeral Home. He is an active member of Homeland Baptist Church and sings southern gospel music with Kyla Rowland and Deliverance and Hope's Voice. He is also licensed in NC, Tennessee and Virginia.
Brad Price, Manager: Licensed F.D. and Embalmer
Mr. Brad Price is the manager of the Church Hill Location and is a native Rogersville, Tennessee. He came to Carter-Trent Funeral Home in May of 2014. Brad is a 2012 graduate in funeral service from Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, AL and is both a Tennessee and Virginia Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. While attending Jefferson State College, he served as vice president of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Sigma.
Brad is married to Jessica Winstead Price; they have a son, Gerald Thomas, and they reside in Surgoinsville. They attend Spires Chapel Baptist Church in Rogersville where Brad serves as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Brad and Jessica both enjoy singing gospel music with the Spires Chapel Trio and The Redeemed and are involved with their community through the Relay For Life for Cancer Research.
Judy Addington, Funeral Director
Judy Addington, is the eldest daughter of Mr. Dean E. & Martha Trent. She is a licensed Funeral Director in Tennessee, holds a courtesy license to practice Funeral Directing in Virginia and is also a licensed Insurance Agent. She has been active in all aspects of the funeral business since 1991 when her family purchased the funeral home. and assists in all facets of the funeral home. Judy is a graduate from ETSU with a BS degree in elementary and secondary education.. She is married to Mark Addington, retired Kingsport Police Chief and they have two sons, Brinley and Breven.
Deana Steadman, Licensed Funeral Director
Deana was born and raised in Kingsport, and has been with the firm from the beginning in 1991. Deana attended North High School and East Tennessee State University. She is a Tennessee Licensed Funeral Director having received her license in 1997. Deana is married to David Steadman and they have twins, Drew and Whitney Steadman.
Jodi Redwine, Office Staff
Jodi was born and raised in Kingsport and has been with the firm from the beginning in 1991. Jodi attended Sullivan North High School and East Tennessee State University. Jodi works in the funeral home office, both in Kingsport and our Scott County locations. She is married to Dr. David Redwine, a Veterinarian, and they have two children, Lindsey and Lendon Redwine.
Jacob K Gasperson, Lic. Funeral Director & Embalmer
Jacob K. Gasperson is a native of Kingsport, Tennessee and recently married Tiffany Rhoton of Fall Branch, Tennessee where they currently reside. In 2006 upon graduation from Dobyns-Bennett High School, he attended college in Nashville for several years before going to American McAllister Funeral Academy in Manhattan, New York, where he graduated in 2013. He is currently a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in Tennessee and is in the process of obtaining his Funeral Service Provider license from Virginia. In his spare time Jacob enjoys farming, hunting and fishing.
Terry Hurley, Lic. F.D.
Terry, who was the manager of our Church Hill location, now works part time for the funeral homes. He began his career in the funeral business in 1970 and joined Carter-Trent Funeral Home in 2004. He is a licensed funeral director in Tennessee and holds a courtesy license in the state of Virginia. Born in Sneedville, TN, he and his wife Diana have lived in Kingsport since 1973 and have one daughter, Dr. Michelle Hurley.
Gregory R. Lubrano, Off. Administrator/Lic FD/Emb
Gregory R. Lubrano – Joined the firm in May 2002 when he relocated from New York. A Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, he holds licenses in Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York and has worked continuously in funeral service since 1976. Greg is the Office Administrator for the companies three locations in Kingsport, Church Hill and Scott County, VA. and works from the main office in downtown Kingsport. Greg is married to Dr. Joann D’Aprile-Lubrano, a family physician with Mountain Region Family Medicine, Kingsport. Together they have 6 children.
Robert Scott Pauzus, Funeral Director and Embalmer
Robert Pauzus joined the staff in March 2013 coming to us from Detroit, Michigan. Although he comes to us from the northern suburbs of Detroit, MI, he has had personal ties to Morristown since 1969. His inspiration to serve comes from the loss of his grandfather's last living brother back in 1972. After graduating from High School in 1976 he served the U.S. Army as a hospital medic for 3 years. Mr. Pauzus attended Wayne State University, Detroit for two years of undergraduate study. His career in funeral service began in May of 1983 as a live-in apprentice while attending the university's College of Mortuary Science and graduated in May of 1984. After serving his apprenticeship he received his Michigan Funeral Director license at the end of 1985. Mr. Pauzus' experience covers all aspects of funeral service and is currently in the process of obtaining his Tennessee FD and Embalmer licenses.
John M Salyers, Lic. Funeral Director and Embalmer
Grew up in the Baileyton Community, attended Baileyton Elementary School and graduated from North Greene High School. He then attended Vanderbilt University before serving honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp. John graduated from John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville and received his Funeral Director and Embalming Licenses in 1965. “I have enjoyed my years in funeral service and I can only hope that in some small way I have helped families get through some of the hardest times in their lives”, John said as he talked about his career.
John married Sharon Ramsey and they have two sons, David and Barry Salyers both of Greenville and a daughter, Heather Hughes and husband David of Knoxville along with a very sweet granddaughter, Macey. We attend Wesley United Methodist Church in Johnson City.
I have a strong connection to Kingsport, John said, as both my father, Moran Salyers, who worked for Eastman for 39 years having retired in 1979; as well as my brother, Eddie who retired in 2008.
I have truly enjoyed working in Kingsport for the last eight years and now working with Carter-Trent Funeral Home who I believe has the most caring people I have ever worked with. The people in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are the “salt of the earth”.
Traci Summey Starnes, Office Staff
Traci, who is originally from Gate City, VA, has lived in Kingsport since 1993. She joined the firm in 2007 as an Administrative Assistant. Traci is married to Michael Starnes and has two children, Madison and Peyton. She and her family attend Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
Jenny R. Sadler, Printer
Joined the staff in May 2008. She was raised in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and now resides in Kingsport with her four cats, Abby, Minnie, Rudy and Hobo. Jenny is a graduate of Powell Valley High School and Chowan College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. She enjoyes many activities including hiking, photograph and especially NASCAR.
Vivian Rector, Family Care Advisor
Vivian’s family moved from Virginia to Kingsport, Tennessee at an early age where she spent her childhood. After her High School graduation, she attended the University of Tennessee and then went on to live in Illinois for several years. Upon returning to Kingsport she began a career in the Funeral Service Profession, obtaining her Tennessee Funeral Directors license in 1996. She has been working in Pre-Need with Carter-Trent since 2006. Vivian is also a Licensed Tennessee Insurance Agent and is a Registered Agent for Pre-Need. Vivian attends bible study (Precept Class) on Tuesday mornings at First Baptist Church, Kingsport.
Debby Marshall, Family Care Advisor
Debby is a life long resident of Kingsport. She has been working in funeral service since 2001, working with families at their time of need. Debby has held her Tennessee Insurance License since 1986. Married to Bobby Marshall, she has two sons, Mitch and Scott as well as four grandchildren, Gracie, Kaylee, Erin and Naomi.
Doug Hurley, Family Care Advisor
Doug has been a resident of Gray, Tennessee for 42 years. He is married to Carolyn Stitt Hurley. Doug and his wife have two sons, Anthony & wife Ronette, Rodney & wife Linda and two grandchildren, Dakota and Kelsey.
He as been a Family Care Advisor in Aftercare and Pre-Need with Carter-Trent Funeral Home since 2000. Doug is a Licensed Insurance Agent and a Registered Pre Need Agent in both Tennessee and Virginia.
Doug and his wife attend Emmanuel Baptist Church of Johnson City. Doug has been a minister of music for 30 years.
George Hutson, Housekeeping
George has lived most of his life in Kingsport. He joined the firm in 2001, working in our maintenance department and has worked in the funeral industry since 1986. George is a veteran having served in the U.S. Marines.
Pam Houseright, Housekeeping
Pam lives in Gate City, VA and has been in this area for over 49 years. Pam came to the firm in October 2002 and works in our housekeeping department, keeping our locations beautiful. She is married to Dwight Houseright (Eastman) and they have 2 daughters, Heather Price and Sarina Duncan and a grandson, Kevin Price. They attend the Oak Glen Baptist Church, Yuma, VA
Jack Edwards, Funeral Assistant
Jack joined the firm in July 2007 and works as a Funeral Assistant. Originally from Grayson County, Virginia, Jack earned a bachelors degree from Tennessee Wesleyan College and his master of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is retired from the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church after serving 45 years in active ministry, having retired as Senior Pastor of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport, TN (June 2007). He is a member of the Kingsport District Committee on Ministry; the Kingsport District Board of Church Location and Building and the Downtown Kingsport Facade Committee. He and his wife Judy, have two children and four grandchildren and attend First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Joe Haynes, Funeral Assistant
Joe is a funeral assistant and has been with the firm since April 2005. A native of Scott County, Joe relocated to Kingsport after serving in the US Army from 1960-1962. Joe graduated from Whitney Business College, working for Eastman Chemical Co. having retired in 1995 after 32 years of service. Joe is married to Phyllis, and they have 1 son and 3 grandchildren and attend the Cedar View Independent Methodist Church.
Billy Jack Johnson, Funeral Assistant
Billy Jack is a funeral assistant having joined the firm in 2003. He was born and raised at Blackwater, VA. He came to Kingsport in 1960. Billy Jack worked for the Mead Corp. for 29 years and then with Willamette Ind. for 3 years before retiring in 1999. In 1962 he married Wanda F. Baker. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren and attend the Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church for which Billy Jack is a member of the Deacon Board.
Mack Edwards, Funeral Assistant
Mack is a native of Scott County (Dry Creek), he has lived in the Weber City area for the past 38 plus years. He is retired from J.P. Stevens Corp after 35 years of service. Having some previous experience as a Funeral Assistant, Mack joined the firm in February 2005. His is married to Jewell Beldsoe Edwards and they have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
Kit McGlothlin, Funeral Assistant
Kit McGlothlin joined Carter-Trent in August of 2012 as a funeral assistant. He is owner of McGlothlin Builders & has been building houses in the Kingsport area for the past 50 years.
Kit was co-founder of the McGlothlin Quartet singing all over the Southeast United States for over 45 years. He is an active member & deacon at Higher Ground Baptist Church. Kit has been married to Carolyn Jordan McGlothlin for the past 56 years and they have a daughter, Kimberly Bagwell & husband, Martin and a son, Derrick McGlothlin and wife, Becky. Kit & Carolyn have one granddaughter, Kylee McGlothlin.
John Eidson, Funeral Assistant
John joined the firm in Jan 2005. He worked for Quebecor World for 40 years retiring in 1998. A 42 year resident of Surgoinsville, after retiring John was elected to the Hawkins Co. Board of Commission and has served for seven years and in 2004 he created the Down Home Gospel TV Channel. John is married to Yvonne Skelton Eidson and in Nov. 2011 they celebrated 50 years of marriage. John and Yvonne have two sons.
Wayne Vaughn, Funeral Assistant
Wayne a life long resident of Surgoinsville, TN, has been at Carter- Trent since 2002 as a funeral assistant. A veteran of the US Air Force, he retired after 31 years of service from Eastman Chemical Corp. Wayne is married to Evie Vaughn. They have 2 children and attend the Oak Grove Baptist Church where Wayne is a Deacon and serves on the Welcome Committee.
Virgil Mauk, Funeral Assistant
Virgil began working in 2011. He is retired from Holliston Mills and a life long resident of Surgoinsville, TN. Virgil is married to Madelyn Linkous Mauk and they have two children. He is member and deacon in Oakdale Central Baptist Church. He enjoys farming and being outdoors.
William Eddie Barrett, Funeral Assistant
Eddie was born and raised in Kingsport, TN. He graduated from Ketron High School in 1975 and worked for Quebecor (Kingsport Press) for 29 years. Eddie is currently working at Wellmont Health Systems. Eddie is married to Sandra and they have a daughter, April.
David Lane, Night Call
David H. Lane joined Carter-Trent Funeral Home in June of 2005. He is a graduate of Liberty University and holds a B.S. Degree in Religion / Biblical Counseling. David took a slight hiatus from us to pursue his ministry and now has returned while he studies for his Masters in Divinity (MID). David serves our family by bringing your loved ones into our care. David has one son, Zach who lives in North Carolina.
Ed Ferguson, Funeral Assistant
Ed has been a resident of Kingsport for the past 40 years. He is a retired Captain of the 5th District Tennessee Highway Patrol and Marine Corp Reserve. Ed is a funeral assistant having come to work at the firm in 2001. Ed was married to the late Ruth Trent and they have 2 married children, Cliff Ferguson and his wife Amy and Jennifer Turner and her husband Michael. They have 3 grandchildren.
Calvin Baker, Funeral Assistant
Calvin is a funeral assistant, he came to work with the firm in October 2004. He has lived in the area for over 34 years having graduated from Gate City High School and the Scott County Vocational School. He is employed at the Eastman Chemical Co for 31 year and the Kingsport Press for 6 years. Calvin is married to Lou Ann Baker and they have 2 children and 1 great grandchild.
Jack Taylor, Funeral Assistant
Jack is a resident of Clinchport, VA for all his life, he has been with the firm since January 2005. Jack graduated from Rye Cove High School and went on to work for Mead Willamette paper mill having retired in 1999. He has sung with the Upward Way Quartet for the past 20 years. Jack is married to Dorothy Russell and they have one son. Jack is also a volunteer in Virginia Defense Force.
M.J. Mann, Funeral Assistant
I joined the staff of Scott County Funeral Home in June of 2010. I am a retired employee of Eastman Chemical Co. having retired in November of 1997. Along with my wife of eleven years, Betty D., I attend Victory Baptist Church in Gate City, VA and teach a young`s Men Sunday school class. I enjoy playing golf, hunting and fishing. We are blessed with a little granddaughter, whom we enjoy very much.
Hunter Lane, Funeral Assistant
Hunter Lane is a Funeral Assistant; he came to the firm in May 2014. Hunter was born and raised in Fort Blackmore, Virginia. A graduate of Gate City High School, he attends Northeast State Community College working toward his degree in Electro-mechanics. Hunter is a member of Fort Blackmore United Methodist Church.
Jackie Needham, Funeral Assistant
Jackie joined Carter-Trent Funeral Home in 2012 as a funeral assistant. He has been married to the former Joan Roberts for 47 years and they have three children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jackie is a U. S. Navy veteran having served in Vietnam. He retired from Eastman Chemical after 34 years of service. Jackie has been a member of First Freewill Baptist Church for 43 years.
Freddie Wayne Henry, Funeral Assistant
Freddie joined Carter-Trent Funeral Homes in 2011. He is retired from AFG Glass Co. and Cemex Cement Co. with a total of 39 years of service. Freddie is married to the former Lola McLain and they are members of Liberty Baptist Church in Church Hill
Carl Johnson, Funeral Assistant
Carl a resident of Surgoinsville, he has lived there for over 50 years. Carl joined the firm in 1996 as a funeral assistant. Carl started working for AFG in 1955. While there he studied Mirror Glass Quality in Paris, France, and attended ETSU earning a Business Certification, retiring then as a production supervisor after 37 years of service. Carl has been a member of the Equalization Board for 11 years. He was married to the late Shirley L. Johnson and they have a son Larry R. and his wife Nancy and a grandson, Caleb. They have attended the Phipps Bend Freewill Baptist Church since the 1950's.
