Colen K. Monroe, 66, of Yuma, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Nov. 9, 2009) at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born in Hawkins County and spent the majority of his life in Yuma, VA. He served with the U.S. Army as a medic in Germany. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 2003 with over 33 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Hammonds Monroe; parents, Malcolm and Winnie Haynes Monroe; sister, Wilma Monroe Dodson; along with an infant brother and an infant sister.
He is survived by his step children, Margaret Ann Smith Good and husband, Patrick of Weber City, VA and Curtis Trent Smith of Castlewood, VA; five step grandchildren; one step great granddaughter; three sisters, Agnes Lucas of Mt. Carmel, TN, Sharon Glover of Yuma, VA and Judy Taylor and husband, Herman of Yuma, VA; two brothers, Douglas Monroe and wife Myrna of Yuma, VA and Marvin Monroe and wife, Glenna of Yuma, VA; along with several nieces, nephews and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday Nov. 12, 2009 at Scott County Funeral Home.
A service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Danny Sykes and Rev. Charlie Taylor officiating. Music will be provided by Dale Smith and Mike Taylor.
A military graveside service will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard/ American Legion Color Guard and Rev. Wrightly Salling on Friday at 11 am at Haynes Family Cemetery, Gate City, VA.
Pallbearers will be Jack Sanders, Scott Sanders, Wayne Davidson, Roger Davis, Barry Glenn, Regan McMurray and Rocky Blakely. Honorary pallbearers will be Norfolk Southern Railroad Employees at Yuma Road.
A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Paul Black and Nurse Linda Jackson, especially Wellmont Hospice nurses, Renee, Misty and Christina, and Weber City Drug Larry and Kent Snapp.
