Ray E. (Sleepy) Daugherty

Ray E. (Sleepy) Daugherty passed away Monday, February 08, 2010 at Brookhaven Manor, Kingsport.

Mr. Daugherty was born in Greene County, (Fall Branch) and lived most of his life in Kingsport on Fuller Street. He was married to his wife, Clara Dingus Daugherty for 63 years, until her passing in 2004. He was retired from the Meade Corp. after over 38 years of service. Mr. Daugherty was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and was a member of Browder Chapel Church, where he served as a deacon.

Along with his wife he was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Daugherty and Marion Daugherty; two brothers, Wilmer Daugherty and George Daugherty; twin sister, Faye Lazenby.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty L. Brown and husband, Kerry of the Bloomingdale area; one son, Billy Daugherty and wife, Ruby of Kingsport; five grandchildren, James David, Christopher Allen, Scott Daugherty, Vickie Lynn McCullough and Tammie Renee Styer; two great grandchildren, Ashlie Rittenburg and Jennifer Styer; one sister, Georgia Archer and husband, Carmon of Hickory, NC; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 am to 12 noon on Thursday February 11, 2010 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport.

A service will be held at 12 noon in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wade Frazier, Pastor Wayne Baker and Rev. Doug Harris officiating. Music will be provided by Alvin Goins and Bruce & Virginia Buckles.

A graveside service will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be David Daugherty, Christopher Daugherty, Scott Daugherty, Tommy Archer, Dwight Dingus, Danny Paul Dingus, Dwight Gentry and Jacob Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be employees and staff of Brookhaven Manor and Fellow workers of the Meade Corp.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Daugherty family.

I recently worked at Brookhaven from oct-dec 2009. And I had the pleasure of meeting and providing care for "Sleepy". He was such a sweet person. I will always remember him. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. But I truly believe he is in a much better place now.

My Mother Mildred Mathews was in the same nursing home as Ray they had been friends since they were children living in Highland. They would talk and laugh about the old times. Mom passed away two years ago but, I can still see them two childhood friends naming names of people they knew and times long gone.
