John Daniel "J.D" Edwards, Sr., 92, of Blountville, TN, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 11, 2010, at his residence with his family at his bedside.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. J.D. was retired from General Shale Corp. after over 30 years of service and was a member of Glenwood Community Church in Hiltons, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Clinton Edwards, Sr. and Nancy Bishop Edwards; daughter, Betty Jo Sproles and granddaughter, Angela Austin.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 72 years, Ruth Doran Edwards, of the home; six daughters, Peggy Austin and husband, Bruce of Kingsport; Louise Depew and husband, Bob of Blountville, Helen Dockery of Kingsport, Nancy Fullen and husband, John of Hiltons, VA, Cynthia Jones and husband, Roger of Church Hill, Rhonda Salley and husband, David of Blountville; two sons, Johnny Edwards and wife, Shelia of Blountville, Gene Edwards and wife, Jan of Georgia; 21 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a brother, Warner Edwards and wife, Bernice of Kingsport and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 - 5 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. Funeral services will be in the chapel at 5 pm with Pastor David Salley and Evangelist Kenneth Neeley, officiating. Music will be provided by Mike Depew, Terry Bennett and Adrian Seaver.
Military Graveside services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Walnut Chapel Cemetery, East Carters Valley Rd, Gate City, VA conducted by the American Legion Post # 3 / 265 and the Virginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and Zeke Ketron. Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his medical caregiver, Dr. Evan Lewis.

Cindy and all of her family. I am so sorry to hear about J.D. He was a sweet man who tried to live life to the fullest. I have grown to love everyone I met while at Dr.Lewis' office. I will be praying for all of you esp. you Ruth. I can't imagine how you feel, but I know how strong you can be esp. with the good LORD to help you. I am so sorry I couldn't come to funeral. I just found out about your dad's passing this morning - no one had called to let me know and I do not get a daily paper. So sorry to hear of his passing. He certainly left a wonderful legacy behind. He is in heaven now celebrating with the angels. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We love you.
