Benjamin Eugene "Ben" Merrill Sr. 83 Church Hill formerly of Fairhope Alabama closed his eyes Thursday morning, surrounded by his family and went to be with the Lord and those family and friends he had lost previously.
Our Daddy was our example, our shelter in the storm and the type of person at the end of our lives we hope we have been. He was a faithful deacon for 12 years at Fairhope Avenue Baptist and served on many committees with special friends Sam Vaughn, Earl Stevens and John McDonald to further the cause of Christ. He and his loving wife Lurene of 50 years, moved to Church Hill in October of 2008 to spend time with their sons and grandchildren. Daddy had spent his life in the electrical construction industry and moved into supervision were he mentored many young folks in the electrical craft to further the vocation.
Preceding daddy in death were his parents Roy and Myra Merrill and one brother Roy Merrill Jr.
Daddy is survived by his caring wife, Lurene T. Merrill, sons Jim Collier and wife Angie, Ben Merrill and wife Diane and Frank Merrill and wife Lora; daughters Margaret Ellen Jones and husband Arthur, Myra Henry and husband Mike and Leonide Seals; sisters Betty Jane Wright and husband Tommy and Myra Lou Marquis and many grandchildren he loved as much as his own children.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Carter Trent Funeral Home in Church Hill, 1115 Hwy 11W, Church Hill, TN
Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel conducted by his loving friend and Pastor, James Hill of Fairhope Avenue Baptist. Music will be provided by Amy Vaughn and Gary Rice.
Graveside services shall be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Christians Bend cemetery by Pastor John Cradic. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:55 p.m. Pallbearers will be Mike Henry, Nathan Ryan, Bill Henard, Harold Christian, Matt Buchman, Ben Ramsey, James H. Collier III, and Christian Howell.
Special thanks to Dr. Randy McLaughlin, Alice Johnson, RN and Renee Skelton, RN for treating daddy as their own dad in our time of need.
